Info Sunsets are always beautiful to look at, so we at FPC are rightly very selective when it comes to promoting such images. But this candidate with a boat on Lake Lesina in Italy appealed to me immediately. So I'll give it a try and look forward to your feedback. One fly in the ointment is the lack of Exif data. This may simply be an editing error, as the author's latest uploads show a Canon EOS 5D Mark III as the camera used.
I think the choice of the current gallery is fine. But if the community thinks…/Natural phenomena#Sun
or…/Water transport#Boats
fits better, of course it will be changed. Created and uploaded by Nella Laquintana, nominated by -- Radomianin (talk) 12:50, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Great interplay of purple, red and orange tones, the reflection is a particularly nice feature of the scene in combination with the balanced composition. Personally, I find the slight noise in the upper part of the image acceptable. -- Radomianin (talk) 12:50, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Support

Comment Seems a great example of her creative style. She was using Canon EOS 5D Mark III with EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM in 2017. Charlesjsharp (talk) 13:52, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Oppose Yes, this is a breathtaking photo! There is no doubt about this. What is not understandable is the ripple of the boat's shadow on a completely calm water surface. At the very least, most of the clouds reflected to the right and left of the boat should also be rippled, but from what you can see the ripples are really too light and in my opinion they have a discordant angle compared to those visible on the boat. Try to zoom-in (getting closer) to the shadow produced by the boat to understand that the sea ripples inexplicably stop on the surface of the lake. Another aspect not to be overlooked is the sunlight which on the boat is too intense to be at sunset. It produces shadows that unquestionably indicate the origin of the natural light coming from the right, in fact the front part of the ship is also partially illuminated. The sunset, however, is clearly in front of us, yet at the back of the boat we can see a shadow that could be a rope or a stake to possibly anchor another boat. But on the right you can see the mirror of the free and serene Lesina's lake. There is no clear indication regarding the general indications and EXIF data present. The only clue about the photo (or maybe the fusion of two photos) which was taken in 2017. I am ready to change my mind and support the photo if the author or anyone else can counter my assumptions. --Terragio67 (talk) 15:36, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
Comment Many thanks to Terragio67, I'm afraid you're right. I must have missed it during the first review. I had some doubts, but I was still unsure and decided in favor of the nomination. To be on the safe side, I will withdraw the nomination. After all, what good is it if an undisclosed manipulation later results in a delisting, which means trouble and extra work for all of us. Thank you again for your attention and best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 16:27, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I strongly believe that withdrawing the image is a wise decision. I am truly sorry to see that these elaborate compositions serve to deceive judges in photography competitions. Unfortunately today we try to amaze others even more and more dishonestly, also due to powerful generative AI tools... I greet you dearly, and I wish you a good weekend. Terragio67 (talk) 16:39, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your words and wishes, Terragio67. It was very thoughtful of you to respond so quickly. I am usually very picky when it comes to checking images. But fortunately four eyes are always better than two. Your comment saved us a lot of unnecessary work at FPC. It's just a shame that the WLE jury was so badly misled. Wishing you a relaxing weekend, too. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 16:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I am really very sorry that you thought of an AI manipulation. I don't know where to start and I don't care at all. I love photography and if I uploaded these photos it is only to give a contribution to my land. This is a photo of a very particular place, Lake Lesina is separated from the sea by a thin strip of land, so at dawn and dusk, exceptional light conditions are often created and, when there is no wind, the lake becomes a perfect mirror, moved only by the slight movement of the boats. I uploaded other photos of this place on Wiki, always taken with the same reflex, Canon Eos 5D Mark III and with an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, I think the exif data are: 55mm - ƒ/8 - 1/200s - ISO 100. I hope I have answered your doubts, in any case I thank you for the attention you have given to my photos. Nella Laquintana (talk) 21:20, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your message, Nella Laquintana. Your photos are a great and valuable contribution to Commons and Wikipedia. However, since Commons is the media archive for all language versions of Wikipedia, and there is a requirement for fidelity and transparency, major retouching that does not accurately reflect reality must be openly labeled on the file page with the template {{Retouched picture}}. This is often forgotten by new contributors and is not a problem, but it is a requirement for experienced Commons photographers. Since the FPC forum is used to discuss the very best photos, such things are very important. Especially since there have been a number of recent discoveries that have led to the revocation of the FP status. Terragio67 discovered that the image was probably a composition of two photos. That's why I withdrew the nomination. This is not a drama and it's all about open and transparent communication. We just want to help. The community would be very happy if you would continue to contribute your wonderful images to Commons, as they add to the diversity for which we are very grateful. I hope I was able to give you a little glimpse behind the scenes, and I personally look forward to seeing more great images that we can nominate at FPC. Best regards and all the best, -- Radomianin (talk) 23:40, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the kind tone of your reply, I really appreciated it, but it seems I have not been able to eliminate your doubts. I have never contributed to Wikipedia and Commons before and I even had difficulty uploading photos, but as in all contests, the jury's decision is final, right or wrong. However, I would like to advise you, for the future, not to directly involve the authors in these discussions, because terms such as "deception" and "dishonesty" can greatly hurt the feelings of those who read, even if said in general and not directed personally, when instead you simply wanted to give a photo to the community, uploading it (among other things) in a very high definition, deception-proof. Thank you for your time. Best regards. Nella Laquintana (talk) 10:53, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Nella Laquintana: Thank you for your reply, which I appreciate very much. However, I would like to respectfully disagree with you that we have not personally accused you of deliberate deception or dishonesty. Nor do we doubt your abilities or good intentions, quite the opposite. Mine and Terragio67's comments were an expression of opinion, not directed at you. If that impression was given, we apologise. The withdrawal of the nomination on the FPC is in part due to the rules that require retouching work to be labelled, as can be read here. Unfortunately, the indications point to retouching. However, I would like to emphasise that the community is very happy to have talented photographers like you in our midst. But the rules apply to all participants. I think I have said everything important at this point. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 11:30, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Nella Laquintana: I fully agree with Radomianin's words. The allegations of dishonesty were aimed at a series of events that recently occurred with the removal of Featured Picture status from some previous photos. Please don't take personally an "OPPOSE" to a single photo of you although I understand that in this specific case it hurts deeply in the way it happened. This doesn't changes my respect for you as a photographer leader on the Italian Wikimedia. Kind regards. --Terragio67 (talk) 21:05, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Terragio67 for your kind reply. I noticed that you live in Italy, I would like to invite you to give yourself a gift: if you come to Puglia, go to Lesina at dawn or dusk. The town is small and does not offer much, but it overlooks the lake, with a low wall that allows you to immediately see the boats in deep water a few meters from the shore. If everything is clear, you will see the sky change color many times in a few minutes, giving you a beautiful show. But if there is a bit of fog, with some light clouds and you are lucky enough not to find wind, the show will be unforgettable and a simple cell phone or a compact camera will be enough to take spectacular photos, without needing to glue skies or anything else. With great honesty, I am not telling you this to plead my case, I love my photos too much to have to justify myself and, probably, I will have removed from above the boat some disturbing element that contrasted with my aesthetic sense, so I should have declared it, but I did not know. However, I would personally like to introduce you to this magical place, about 90 km from my home, and to make you change your mind about your observations, beyond the competition of the contest.
- Thank you so much for your time and for the attention you have dedicated to my photo. Best regards and ... see you soon in Puglia! Nella Laquintana (talk) 07:01, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
